Pouvoir (“Power”) is a sound, video and sculptural installation exhibited at the Cité internationale des arts in May 2018 and in Alchemy at BRIC from 28 June - 12 August, 2018 (curated by Elizabeth Ferrer and Jenny Gerow). Sparked by research into African diasporic histories and presences in Paris, France during a six-months artist residency, this work explores themes of alienation and belonging, the layered nature of identity, and the shifts between internal and external perceptions of the self and the “other” (and the other selves) as conflated by time, space, and movement. Deconstructed and reconstructed hanging yarn sculptures point to a willingness to hold space for the uncertainty of entanglement.

This work was created during my participation in Lower Manhattan Cultural Council’s Paris Residency program at the Cité internationale des arts, sponsored by Mairie de Paris/Mayor’s Office of the City of Paris, from January - July, 2018.
